Penrith City Library

Penrith City Library members will soon be able to use faster ‘Green Computers’ at the Civic Centre from this month thanks to a new agreement with ACER Computer Australia & Dataflex (Acer Channel Partner).

Under the agreement, ACER and Dataflex will supply 90 computers and also plant 90 trees to offset the computers’ carbon emissions. This means that the computers will have zero carbon footprint and the trees planted are expected to offset the carbon emissions for the lifetime of the computers.

Acer Computer Australia is midway through its largest ever environment mission which entails planting a million trees by 2011. This mission is part of Acer’s increasing efforts to become better corporate citizens.

The Veriton L480 computers which Penrith City Library has bought use half the power of conventional personal computers (135W compared to 300W of power) and are also significantly faster than the current computers in the Library. This equates to faster processing speeds for users and substantial cost savings for the organisation.

Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said: “The computers are much smaller than standard desktop computers and this means more room for the individual to work and surf comfortably. The screen sits on top of a very small computer processing unit and the whole unit and screen weigh under three kilograms.”

Councillor Crameri said: “Most importantly, in the future when these computers become redundant, the Penrith City Council and Acer has agreed the installation costs of the new computers will be waived. We are passionate about reducing our carbon footprints, and have committed to refurbish our old equipment for distribution to Third World Countries or to re-use the working spare parts.”
