Queensland with a strong government market sector was the natural next expansion step for Dataflex adding to our offices in Canberra and Sydney. For a number of years our key vendors (Acer, Extreme Networks, Netapp for example) have asked Dataflex to open a presence in Queensland and assist, as a key government focused channel partner, in government business. The Dataflex management team decided to open the Queensland office in the heart of the CBD on Adelaide Street. A warm welcome from our key partners has made it easy so far to build our network in a new territory. Our new Northern Region District Manager – Mr Andreas Deakin will work primarily on local and state government opportunities in south-east Queensland as well as federal government business in Townsville and Darwin. After the success in local and state government in NSW we see QLD as the next growth market for Dataflex. Dataflex is GITC accredited and a registered and approved supplier for CITEC . Our application for the Local Buy contract panel is pending.

Dataflex is a proud sponsor of the Broulee Surfers Surf Life Saving Club (BSSLSC) and was happy to give a hand alongside the Toohey’s New Crew with the renovation of their new deck last week.

Dataflex is a proud sponsor of the Broulee Surfers Surf Life Saving Club (BSSLSC) and was happy to give a hand alongside the Toohey’s New Crew with the renovation of their new deck last week.
The BSSLSC has a great community spirit that dataflex’ Managing Director Brian Evans is thrilled to be a part of. Brian is warmly welcomed at BSSLSC every weekend and public holiday throughout the year. Broulee has been Brian’s home away from home for many years, and the BSSLSC is a great place to relax after a hard day surfing.
The BSSLSC had a particular appeal this Australia Day public holiday as Paul Harragon led the Toohey’s New Crew in a community based project to renovate the BSSLSC’s deck after it was condemned last October.
Paul “The Chief” Harragon led the dedicated crew of local and interstate volunteers over the four day transformation, with festivities at completion on Australia Day.
There was no lack of support for the task, with the NSW Origin Legends lead by Max “Thrower” Krilich with Paul “Sirro” Sironen and Steve “Blocker” Roach who also turned up to give a hand with the much needed renovation and to witness the beer economy at work.
The crew worked tirelessly, with the volunteers reaching over 100 over the four days. The BSSLS Club President Geoff Wells was so pleased with the outcome and the hard yards put in by each and every volunteer.
The festivities didn’t stop there, after the official handover the celebrations started. There was a Beach Volleyball competition, skydivers and market stalls to be enjoyed by one and all. In the afternoon the Beer Economy really started to show its value with The Tooheys Crew inviting everyone over the age of 18 back to the BSSLC for a well deserved Tooheys.
Next on the agenda for this exceptionally busy club is the Bay to breakers ocean swim on March 11- Keep your eye on the next instalment of the BSSLSC at http://oceanswim.brouleesurfersslsc.org.au

Acer deal gives schools online edge
Students enjoy greater mobility with 3G-enabled Notebook

Acer Computer Australia has won a Queensland Department of Education and Training (DET) tender to supply notebooks for round three of the National Secondary School Computer Fund. This contract will see the deployment of up to 65,000 Acer Aspire 1830T notebooks before the end of the year.

Charles Chung, Managing Director, Acer Computer Australia, said Acer’s commitment and support for this project would help Queensland students gain the benefits of productive learning in the digital age for many years to come.

“Collaborative and mobile work places are common in today’s environment, and ensuring our students are well equipped to face tomorrows demand is fundamental in that process. Having access to information on demand and the best technology to process that information is important in helping develop today’s students.” Mr Chung said.

After trials to test viability with students, the Acer Aspire 1830T Notebooks were successfully integrated and provided a digital learning environment without boundaries. The 3G-enabled Acer Notebook is being hailed as a first in Australian education for a program of this scale.

“The implementation of HSPA+ 3G technology in the Acer Aspire 1830T Notebook delivers a host of benefits and is a key component to the educational development of Queensland students. They are better equipped to access rich multimedia, websites and school material whilst away from the school’s network.” Mr Chung continued.

As part of the contract between DET and Acer and in conjunction with the National Secondary School Computer Fund, Acer was selected based on a number of areas including the ability to offer a lightweight notebook solution with maximum battery life and portability that ensures the best possible solution for DET students.

Under the agreement, Acer is also set to provide its Educare solution, which includes a Computrace license protecting against theft and a student notebook bag customised by Targus for protection and portability. Both Acer’s global expertise in notebook development and rollout capability operations ensures for a successful rollout plan to be completed before year end.

David O’Hagan, Chief Information Officer, DET said the rollout of 3G-enabled devices has the potential to be life-changing for students. “A rollout of high-end, 3G laptops has never been done before in Australia, let alone on this scale. This 3G initiative will ensure more than 60,000 state high school students have access to the department’s online learning environment, anywhere and at any time.” Mr O’Hagan said.

“The decision to purchase 3G laptops means students will have better access to important online resources, resulting in improved learning outcomes, collaboration and greater opportunity for personalised learning.” Mr O’Hagan continued.

With tablets proving popular in schools as a supplementary device to aid in learning, paper may soon become a thing of the past as the current generation of students from Brighton Grammar move quickly from textbooks to tablets.

Starting now, students and staff from years 9-12 at Brighton Grammar Victoria will each be equipped with an Acer Iconia Tab A500 in its new teaching program that is to be hailed the first large Android program for an Australian school.

Derek Walker, National Education Sales Manager, Acer Computer Australia said, “We plan to roll-out just over 600 Iconia Tabs to the schools senior boys and their teachers. Everybody is learning how to use digital formats and we’re really trying to provide a comprehensive digital solution for Brighton Grammar in moving to a 21st Century learning environment.”

The Iconia Tab A500 and schools high-speed wireless Internet connection gives students broader access to knowledge faster and easier, as well as allowing them to participate more actively with their teachers and their new tablet devices. Teachers can project to a larger screen via HDMI and or stream information to students wirelessly.

For an integrated and fully functional browsing experience, the Iconia Tab A500 also supports Adobe Flash. The availability of Adobe Flash on the tablet offers students the opportunity to experience superior browsing capabilities, including learning objects built-in Adobe flash.

Andrew Baylis, Deputy Head – Curriculum, Brighton Grammar School said, “Technology is changing so rapidly that we need to choose the best devices for present needs. We see tablets as adding to the teaching and learning experience with ‘instant on, quick connectivity’ that allows us to capture the moment of inspiration. Tablets are not intended to replace techniques such as handwriting, physical activity or face-to-face discussion, but rather to add extra dimensions to all our current teaching and learning practices.”

In addition to portability and anytime/anywhere access, the Iconia Tab A500 utilises a full size USB port allowing connection with a range of peripheral devices including a full sized keyboard, mouse and USB flash drive.

“Our Iconia Tab is helping learning head to a future where books and paper can’t follow. With instant access to a vast number of apps and programs, note-taking capabilities, email functions and the world wide web, the A500 is truly the perfect educational tool.” Mr Walker said.

The devices are powered by nVidia Tegra 2 and run on Google’s Android Honeycomb 3.2. Students will connect to the Internet using a new Wireless LAN network currently being installed at the school.
