On Sunday 4th September, Father’s Day, there were not too many breakfasts out at cafe’s, or relaxing home cooked family lunches, for those in the under 9s through to the under 18s and their families. There were rugby grand finals to be played!

What a weekend at Canberra Stadium and O’Connor Oval. Over the course of the weekend there were 26 x junior rugby finals played and won. Many Canberra schools and clubs participated in the weekend that was Rugby 2011.

The outcomes were varied, as were the referees’ decisions, but all in all each game had a winning team and a team that came second, and every player enjoyed their last game of the season with passion and commitment to their team.

Dataflex are proud to sponsor the George Gregan Cup, which is given to the top under 18’s rugby team, every year. In fact, Dataflex are so passionate about their rugby, and about the Canberra community, that they also sponsor the Brumbies and the Act Rugby Veterans. Talk about rugby-centric!

The Final game of the season was held at the Canberra Stadium, under lights. Marist v Eddies, old rivals facing off, Marist at the top of the ladder, Eddie’s making a comeback. The game had all the makings of a good old fashioned showdown. The crowd was on the edge of their seats, keen to witness the top two teams battle it out. The crowd were cheering for their team and loyalties were made clear to all involved right from the start.

Half time and the score was 10 – nil, to the Eddie’s team. In the second half Marist rallied and scored three tries -putting some much needed points on the board. Unfortunately, there were not enough to beat Eddie’s, who played a stronger game still, resulting in the final score: 20 – 17.

It was a great weekend all round, thank you to all of the organisers of the competition throughout the season, to the players, to the mums and dads for supporting their children and the game, and to all who turned up to watch the stars of the future.

Of course, a big thank you to all of the fathers who gave up the usual Father’s Day festivities to come along and watch the weekend unfold – the weekend that was Rugby 2011!
