Dataflex surf boat launches at Broulee

August 3, 2011

Pip and Vikki from the Broulee Surfers Surf Lifesaving Club (SLSC), women’s team, were sure not expecting what they got when they knocked on a certain door in Broulee on a rainy day in March.

The club members were doing their usual door knock appeal to raise much needed funds for a new boat for the women’s team. When behind that door was Brian Evans, the owner and Managing Director of Dataflex.

Brian is well known around Canberra for his quirky, unusual, intelligent, and enjoyable outlook on life. He is a firm believer of giving back to the community that has supported him, his family, his friends and his business. Community spirit is never far from Brian’s agenda. He is renowned for doing what he says, so when he says “If I sponsor the Broulee SSLSC could I have my companies name on a boat”……………..things start to look up for the Broulee Surfers Surf Lifesaving Club.

Since that day there has been much toing and froing between Dataflex and boat makers, Dataflex and boat sign writers, and of course Dataflex and the Broulee Surfers SLSC.

Finally everything has come together and on Saturday 23rd July 2011, Dataflex General Manager Chris Churchill was proud to christen the new boat at Broulee Surfers SLSC.

The new boat looks fantastic with a vibrant shade of Dataflex blue on the exterior, and a lovely mottled grey on the interior. The signs along the sides of the boat certainly display the Dataflex brand with pride. And just when you thought a surf lifesaving boat couldn’t look any better, you catch a glimpse of the Dataflex logo printed neatly on the end of each ore. This truly is a sight to admire.

In addition to being Dataflex branded, the new boat is also named in the traditional way. The Surfers SLSC committee suggest and vote on an outstanding member of the club and name the boat after the member of honour. In this case “Spike” has been named after Mike ‘Spike’ Spellacy who is the longest serving patrol Captain at the Broulee Surfers SLSC, he was also made into a life member for the club. In total last year Broulee SSLSC conducted 28 rescues, 56 First Aid actions and 525 preventative actions, the emergency response team was involved in 14 callouts to other locations. What a tremendous job!

Dataflex wishes the Broulee Surfers SLSC Open Women Crew Canberra all the best for their shot at the infamous George Bass. Happy training in Canberra and the coast with the new boat, “Spike”.
